Greetings, friends, I’m Dr. Nik Hedberg and the Hashimoto’s tip of the day is iodine supplementation.
A very, very controversial topic, so let’s stick with what the research shows because that’s the most important thing, especially when we’re talking about iodine. One of the things we know about iodine is that if you give iodine to someone with Hashimoto’s, the research shows that this will increase what we call lymphocytic infiltration into the thyroid gland and increase activity.
What that means is that in Hashimoto’s, there are lymphocytes sort of attacking the gland, so to speak, and this causes inflammation. And we know that if we give iodine to someone it increases that attack, that activity and the inflammation.
This is why we’ll see antibody levels skyrocket and the patient’s symptoms get much, much worse. I’m of the school of thought that we avoid iodine supplementation in Hashimoto’s because there is a risk of increasing inflammation and destruction in the gland.
Iodine in Multivitamins
Some multiple vitamins have small amounts of iodine, somewhere around 150 to 200 micro-grams. I haven’t seen that to cause any problems. It’s the much higher doses that people are using, 6 milligrams, 12.5 milligrams, 25 milligrams, 50 milligrams, very, very high doses of iodine and I recommend that you stay away from that and be very safe when you’re dealing with iodine and Hashimoto’s.
